Getting to the Point with Gothic Style Garden Arches
Gothic, or pointed arches are a major element of Gothic architecture, a style prevalant in Europe during the late middles ages.
The shape is distinctive in its most popular form in that two curving sides form quite a sharp angle and meet at a single point at the top of the arch (or "crown").
A Gothic arch is a common style for a metal arch, with a wide range to choose from at all price levels. But did you know there are actually two types of Gothic arch?
Traditional Gothic Arch
A traditional Gothic arch has gently sloping sides culminating in a simple point - very much like the shape of a church window which was popular usage in the Gothic architecture of the middle ages.
The Poppyforge Gothic Metal Arch is one of few that feature this shape. It is superbly constructed from heavyweight solid steel and is 1.4 metres wide and 2.2 metres tall. Another contender is the Crocus Gothic Lattice Arch.
Ogee Gothic Arch
A more widely available style of Gothic arch is the Ogee, which consists of a double curve rising to a sharp point. This is sometimes also referred to as a Venetian arch owing to its popularity in that city.
The ever popular Selections Tuscan Arch is available for around £70, while the sturdy Agriframes Gothic Arch is available in various widths.
The Whitby arch by Forest Garden is unusual because it is a Gothic timber arch. It was styled after the whalebone monument on Whitby's seafront.
Another unusual shape is the Wigwam arch by Ascalon which is an Ogee arch but with extra curvy sides that give the arch a teepee profile.
