Creating a Covered Pergola Walkway in Your Garden

We recently chanced upon The Salters' Garden in the Barbican area of the City of London.

This tiny public park, a one acre plot sitting between part of the old Roman London Wall and a modern office block, was recently improved with new paving and a commemorational water feature.

But we think the stand-out feature of this little space is the pergola - a stuning array of metal arches that provide a shady walk through from one side of the garden to the other.

A covered pergola (or 'tunnel') is a common feature in public gardens, and there are a number of products on the market that can let you acheive the same effect in your own space.

Based on their popular garden arches and made from galvanised tubular steel, these pergolas are available in 4 different styles and in depths up to 9.75 metres.

There is a wide choice of widths too, from 1.2 metres right up to 3 metres wide. An optional lattice infill is available to give support to your plants and also give the pergola a more enclosed feel.

As with their garden arches, Agriframes provide a 10 year guarantee for complete peace of mind.

Roll Your Own

Wrenbury Tunnel

There's nothing to stop you DIY-ing your own tunnel simply by joining some suitable arches together.

The Rowlinson Wrenbury Round Top for example, is a fine arch in itself, but by connecting serveral together you can form the basis of a very nice tunnel walkway once your climbing plants get established.

Gothic Tunnel Pergola

Gothic Tunnel

This tunnel is 1.4 metres wide and 1.8 metres deep, while the stunning gothic apex tops out at 2.2 metres.

This tunnel is effectively two gothic arches seamlessly joined together with extension bars.

What is interesting about this product (and the arch it's based on) is that it's constructed from solid steel - 12mm thick in fact, which makes it an ideal choice for heavy climbers or exposed locations.

Even better, these gothic arches are designed and built in the UK.
